🧭 Finding Boat & Stream Speed

2 exam question types, fully solved

The most common ask in this chapter is: find the boat speed, the stream speed, or a new travel time from the journeys you are given. The trick is to always reach the two effective speeds and first, then add or subtract.

Half-sum for the boat, half-difference for the stream

If a leg gives a distance and a time, first turn it into a speed with (convert minutes to a fraction of an hour before dividing). That gives you downstream and upstream .

Then add and halve for the boat, subtract and halve for the stream:

Β Β·Β  .

β€’ Two-journey problems: when each trip mixes some upstream and some downstream distance for a total time, write one equation per trip in and : . Don't grind the algebra β€” test the HCF of the downstream distances for and check it fits both rows.

β€’ Equal-time clue: if up and down take the same time, distance is proportional to speed, so the distance ratio is the speed ratio .

Find boat & stream speed from U and D
U (upstream):km/h
D (downstream):km/h
Boat speed = (U+D)/2
10.00 km/h
Stream speed = (Dβˆ’U)/2
4.00 km/h

A boat does 49 km downstream in 7 h () and 36 km upstream in 9 h (). The stream speed = km/h.

Real exam questions β€” Finding Boat & Stream Speed

2 question types Β· 8 solved examples from real SSC papers

Real SSC PYQs on finding boat and stream speeds, from simple upstream/downstream pairs to two-journey equation systems.

How to solve this type
Turn each journey into a speed with speed=distancetime\text{speed}=\dfrac{\text{distance}}{\text{time}} if needed, then read off the two effective speeds: downstream D=b+sD=b+s and upstream U=bβˆ’sU=b-s. The boat speed is the half-sum b=D+U2b=\dfrac{D+U}{2} and the stream speed is the half-difference s=Dβˆ’U2s=\dfrac{D-U}{2}. Add for the boat, subtract for the stream, and always halve.
