๐Ÿ” What is Classification? Approach & Types

Classification is the process of grouping items that share a common property and identifying the odd one out โ€” the item that does not share that property. In competitive exams (SSC, Railways, UPSC), 3โ€“5 questions on classification appear in every paper. The key skill is identifying the common thread among the group first, then finding what breaks it.

Word ClassificationCategory / AttributeItems grouped by semantic category (fruits, tools, metals) or shared attribute (living/non-living, renewable/non-renewable).
Number ClassificationMath PropertyItems grouped by a number property: prime, perfect square, cube, multiple, even/odd, or digit-sum pattern.
Letter Group ClassificationPosition / Skip PatternGroups formed by vowels/consonants, alternate-letter skips, or arithmetic progressions in alphabetical positions.
Pair ClassificationRelationship PatternPairs related by the same logical rule (capital:country, tool:function, creator:creation) โ€” find the pair where the rule breaks.
The 3-Step Approach
Step 1Scan all four items and identify what three of them have in common โ€” the common property is the group theme.
Step 2Check whether the fourth item satisfies that same property. If not, it is the odd one out.
Step 3If multiple items seem "different", choose the one that is different in the most specific and uniquely defined way. Exams prefer clear, unambiguous answers.

In the group: Apple, Mango, Grapes, Carrot โ€” the odd one out is because the other three are fruits, while this is a vegetable.

Classification questions ask you to find the item that does NOT share the of the other items in the group.

In the group: Chair, Table, Bench, Pillow โ€” the odd one out is because Chair, Table, Bench are furniture items while Pillow is a bedding accessory.

๐Ÿ“Practice Questions

Q1Which word does NOT belong to the same group? Apple, Mango, Carrot, Grapes

Q2Find the odd one out: Chair, Table, Bench, Pillow

Q3Identify the one that does not belong: Tiger, Lion, Cheetah, Elephant
