🧾 Commission & Tiered Rates

1 exam question type, fully solved

Commission and bonus problems split the total into bands, and each band is charged at its own rate.

Work band by band

Apply the first rate to the first slab, the next rate to the next slab, then add the pieces — never one single rate on the whole amount.

• The base for a later rate is only the amount left after the earlier slabs, so the “rest” = total − (all earlier slabs).

• If the slabs do not cover the full total, the uncovered part earns nothing unless a rate is stated for it.

Shortcut: when every slab is the same size, just add the rates and apply once.

Slab problems charge each band at its own rate — never one rate on the whole amount.

How to solve this type
Tiered or slab problems split the total into bands, and each band is charged at its own rate — never apply a single rate to the whole amount. Work band by band from the bottom: apply the first rate to the first slab, the next rate to the next slab, and so on, then add the pieces. The base for a later rate is only the amount left after the earlier slabs are removed, so the "rest" or "remaining" part is the total minus every slab before it. If the slabs do not add up to the full total, any uncovered amount earns nothing unless a rate is stated for it. Shortcut: when all the slabs are the same size, just add the rates and apply that single percentage to one slab.
