π£οΈ What is Voice?
Voice in grammar tells us whether the subject of a sentence performs the action or receives it. A sentence can only be in passive voice if its verb is transitive β meaning it takes a direct object. Intransitive verbs (sleep, laugh, arrive, rise) cannot be made passive.
The structure of every sentence is: Subject β Verb β Object (S-V-O). When we change to passive: the Object becomes the new Subject, the verb changes to be + V3, and the original Subject moves to the end as a βbyβ phrase.
She writes a letter.
A letter is written by her.
The verb rise is intransitive. The sentence βThe sun rises in the eastβ because it has no object to become the new subject.
In βThe dog bit the boyβ, the passive form is: βThe boy by the dog.β
A sentence can be made passive only if the main verb is: (it must have a direct object).
